She must learn again to speak
starting with I
starting with We
starting as the infant does
with her own true hunger
and pleasure
and rage.

About the Swing For the Fences Collection

About the Swing For the Fences Collection

These fences are magic.

Not for what they keep out, but for what they contain. In the language of balls and strikes, strikeouts and stolen bases, base hits and double plays, boys learn life...

How to show up.

How to dream big.

How to pay attention.

How to ask for help.

How the little things are everything.

How to make mistakes, own them, learn from them.

How to bounce back.

How to pick up, back up, shore up their teammates.

How to trust one another.

How to disagree, respectfully.

How to lose well...and how to win without forgetting what it feels like to be the other team.

We're there to support and encourage. But mostly we're there to practice letting them go, giving them space to succeed or fail on their own. Through a patchwork of metal, we watch them become men and we learn from them everything we've forgotten. About passion and compassion. About drive, commitment and teamwork. About what it really means to be part of something bigger than ourselves.

These fences are beautiful.
